What Happens When Someone Dies at Home? A Step-by-Step Guide

Losing someone you love is never easy. When a death occurs at home, it can feel overwhelming, especially if you are unsure what needs to happen next.

While every situation is different, there are clear steps to follow. Understanding the process can help bring some reassurance during a difficult and emotional time.

If the Death Was Expected

If the person was receiving end-of-life care or had a known terminal illness, the first step is usually to contact the healthcare professional responsible for their care.

This may be:

  • Their GP
  • A district nurse
  • A hospice nurse
  • An out-of-hours medical service.

A medical professional will attend and verify that the death has occurred. Verification is different from registering the death and is simply the formal confirmation that the person has died.

Once verification has taken place, you can contact a funeral director.

At Harrison Funeral Home, we can arrange for your loved one to be brought into our care at any time of the day or night, offering guidance on the next steps and answering any questions you may have.

If the Death Was Unexpected

If the death was sudden or unexpected, you should call 999 immediately.

Emergency services will attend and assess the situation. Depending on the circumstances, the death may need to be referred to the Coroner.

This is a normal process whenever the cause of death is unknown or requires further investigation.

The Coroner may decide that:

  • No further investigation is needed
  • A post-mortem examination is required
  • An inquest should be held.

If the Coroner becomes involved, they will guide you through the process and explain what happens next.

When Should You Contact a Funeral Director?

Many families assume they must wait until all paperwork has been completed before contacting a funeral director, but this is not the case.

You can contact Harrison Funeral Home as soon as you feel ready.

We can:

  • Arrange transportation of your loved one into our care
  • Explain the registration process
  • Liaise with hospitals, hospices and the Coroner where required
  • Discuss funeral options when the time is right
  • Provide support and guidance throughout the arrangements.

There is no pressure to make immediate decisions. Our role is simply to help you understand your options and support you at your own pace.

Registering the Death

In England and Wales, a death should usually be registered within five days, although this may take longer if the Coroner is involved.

The medical examiner’s office, GP surgery, hospital or Coroner will explain when the necessary documentation is available and how to arrange the registration appointment.

Once the death has been registered, you will receive the paperwork needed for funeral arrangements and estate administration.

Taking Time for Yourself

The hours immediately after a death can feel like a blur. It is important to remember that you do not need to manage everything alone.

Whether the death was expected or sudden, taking a moment to contact close family members, friends or trusted professionals can help ease some of the burden.

At Harrison Funeral Home, we are here to provide practical guidance, compassionate support and reassurance whenever you need us.
