Direct Cremation

Our Direct Cremation funeral option starts at £975, including VAT. 

A Direct Cremation is minimalist, so is the most affordable type of funeral available. It is a simple, fuss-free affair, enabling you to send off your loved one in a dignified manner, affordably. It is an unattended service (i.e. no mourners) with a simple coffin. Our dedicated team will look after your loved one from the time we bring them into our care to the time we escort them to the crematorium on the day of their funeral.

You are welcome to customise the Direct Cremation option in a variety of ways – please note that any extras you may choose are subject to additional charges.

Direct Cremation

DIRECT CREMATION PRICE BREAKDOWN

Included in the £975 Cost:

  • Our professional services

    This includes our professional services, administration, expert advice, and help with all official paperwork. It also includes the provision of necessary staff to carry out various functions during the arrangements - from your personal funeral arranger to behind the scenes service operatives.

  • Office hours collection of your loved one into our care

    We will collect your loved one and bring them into our care during office hours, Monday - Friday, within a 25-mile radius of the M25. For further afield, additional mileage is charged at £2 per mile.

  • Care of your loved one at Harrison premises

    We look after your loved one at our private premises from the day we collect them to the day of their funeral. Per your directions, we can dress them in clothing provided by you, or a simple, white funeral shroud.

  • Simple coffin

    Our quality, fuss-free, simple coffin will include your loved one's name etched onto a plate and fixed to the outside.

  • Transport of the deceased to the crematorium

    On the morning of the cremation, we will transport your loved one to the crematorium. Upon arrival, we will escort them inside and remain with them until the curtains close. We can also say something on your behalf if you would like us to.

  • Cremation fees for our local crematorium

    The cremation service time is before 9:30AM and is unattended by mourners. If you would prefer an attended service, please see our Simple Cremation option.

  • Collecting cremated remains from the crematorium on your behalf

    We will collect and return the cremated remains to a family member locally. The official Cremation Certificate will be included, which confirms who was cremated and when. The Certificate should be kept with the ashes, especially if you are taking them abroad.

NOT included in the £975 Cost:

  • Doctor's fees

    It is a legal requirement for a doctor/doctors to sign the Certificate of Cremation. Since COVID-19, only one doctor has been needed, with a fee of £82. Please note that this is subject to change at any time by the government, reverting back to a statutory requirement of 2 doctors, with two individual payments of £82.

    If Her Majesty’s Coroner is involved, these fees are not required

  • Out of hours collection of your loved one into our care

    Out of hours collection of your loved one into our care costs £220, within a 25-mile radius of the M25. For further afield, additional mileage is charged at £2 per mile.

  • Civil Celebrant or Minister

    As an unattended ceremony, there will be no celebrant or minister at a Direct Cremation. You may like to consider a Simple Cremation if this is a must.

  • Flowers

    Flowers can be arranged on your behalf and placed with the coffin. From a single stem, to a simple posy, to a large custom wreath, we can help coordinate flowers for you.

  • Viewings in the Chapel

    Viewings can be arranged at your request in our Chapel of Rest. During office hours, this would cost £200 because your loved one will need care before you sit with them.

  • Cremated remains courier delivery

    We can arrange a courier to deliver the ashes to you anywhere in the UK. Prices are available upon request and are based on third-party fees. You are of course welcome to arrange a courier yourself.

Payment terms: Fees are payable 48 hours prior to the funeral taking place. Payment can be made via bank transfer, direct debit and all major credit cards.

Getting Help With Funeral Costs

You may be entitled to a Funeral Expenses Payment (also called a Funeral Payment) from the govenment if you receive certain benefits and need help to pay for a funeral you’re arranging.

David Bowie personally chose a direct cremation for himself prior to his death.

Reportedly, he wanted his life celebrated, rather than mourned and he viewed a direct cremation as the way to enable this.

About Funeral Costs

Funeral costs can be broken down into three types of fees – those of the funeral home, third-parties and optional extras. These are explained here:

Funeral home fee

This covers all aspects of funeral arrangements, including professional assistance and attending to official paperwork, arranging graves and similar, caring for the deceased, and more.  

Third-party fees

In the funeral sector, you will regularly hear third-party costs referred to as ‘disbursements.’ Examples of this is a Minister’s or Celebrant’s personal fees, or the purchase of a grave.

Optional extras

Any additional items you may want to include at a funeral, such as flowers, orders of service, etc.

After the Direct Cremation

As attitudes towards funerals evolve, many families today are opting for direct cremations for their loved ones.

A direct cremation funeral gives the family freedom and time to plan something personal for when the ashes are home, such as a Celebration of Life service. This can be a formal service, with a Funeral Director to escort the ashes, or a simple family get-together to remember the person’s life. 

Some families choose to keep the cremated remains in an urn at home, whilst others prefer to scatter them. This is a deeply personal decision and different for everyone.

When families choose to keep the ashes at home, we can help you by providing choices of urn (or urns if the ashes will be shared). See here for more information, or talk to us.

When families choose to scatter the ashes, we can help with a formal cremated remains ceremony. There are a variety of ways this can be conducted, such as formally with a Funeral Director to escort the ashes to the scattering service, or more simply by providing you with a scatter tube for a family-only occasion.

Alternative options for ashes

Today, there are many creative choices for a loved one’s ashes, aside from the traditional scattering.

Ashes can now be:

  • Used in creating keepsake jewellery
  • Used in ink by a specialist painter
  • Used in ink by a specialist tattoo artist
  • Scattered in outer space (see video from our friends at Aura)
  • Sent out with a bang from inside fireworks
  • Transformed into a tree with a seed, soil and Mother Nature
  • Scattered at sea or on a river (check the law first, or ask us).
