LGBT FUNERAL DIRECTORS LONDON

At Harrison Funeral Home, we provide compassionate and supportive funeral care for the LGBTQ community.

We understand that when a person who has died was LGBT+ that there may be unique and individual circumstances needing to be understood, such as previously faced discrimination, or factors that may relate to whether the person was out or not. Those things that were important to the individual in life are as important to us now for creating their unique funeral arrangements.

When you contact us, our award-winning team will bring your loved one into our care, and we will look after them at our premises until the day of the funeral.

We will work with you to plan a funeral that is personal to your loved one. From the outset, you will have one dedicated funeral arranger looking after you and making all funeral preparations on your behalf, and in line with your requirements.

TRANS FUNERALS

At Harrison’s we recognise that members of the trans community may have unique funeral needs.

We would like to assure you that we will listen to your needs and will treat the deceased person with the utmost respect in our care.

We have trans-specific funeral protocols in place, such as:

  • If requested, our trans mortician and embalmer will care for the deceased. This includes the steps of washing and dressing (which is always conducted privately).
  • As requested, we will always use the person’s name and never intentionally dead name. There may be instances where legal paperwork does not reflect a person’s name, for example, if a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) has not been issued. Unfortunately, this is outside of the funeral home’s control but on all of our Harrison paperwork, where the requirements are not legal, we will always use the name the person used in life.
  • We will always use a person’s correct pronouns. Please make sure to let us know everyone’s pronouns (and we will tell you ours!)

For every funeral we deliver, we provide a welcoming environment to all to comfortably plan a person’s final send-off that is personal to them.

LGBT+ FUNERALS FAQs

If you are heterosexual, you may not think that sexuality or gender identity has much to do with funeral arrangements. However, we live in a ‘heteronormative’ society where many tend to think someone is not, for example, gay and treat them as such. This can cause problems for people who are not heterosexual.

At Harrison’s we appreciate that LGBT+ people may have been previously discriminated against because of who they are. We want to make it clear that not only do we deeply care about LGBT+ rights, but that we provide a space that is welcoming to all.

Yes, and we do appreciate there are other abbreviations used such as (but not limited to):

  • LGBTQ and LGBTQ+
  • LGBTQIA+
  • LGBTQQIA
  • LGBTQI

These all broadly mean the same thing and the truth is, there is no option that everyone agrees with.

Furthermore, the most up-to-date study about which acronym is preferred within the community was conducted in 2019 by Community Marketing & Insights, the world’s leading LGBTQ market research firm. Asking how people felt about LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQ+, LGBT+, queer, LGBTQIA+, and LGBTQIA, it found that ‘LGBT’ and ‘LGBTQ’ were the runaway winners.

In Harrison Funeral Home communications, we do not drop any of the letters with the intention of alienating or offending anyone. Our intention is to be able to reach as many families as possible, so that you may know we exist and importantly, so that we may help you. To do this, we use the internet search terms LGBT and LGBT+.
