What Our NAFD Membership Means for You

Harrison Funeral Home is a long-time member of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD).

Since 1905, the NAFD has been the UK’s leading funeral trade association and is dedicated to maintaining the highest professional standards by inspecting all funeral directors prior to membership approval, as well as issuing the industry standard Code of Practice for its members to abide by.

So, when choosing a funeral home, it is important to look for those who are members of the NAFD. This ensures that not only are they regularly inspected, but that they abide by the extensive Code of Practice.

Currently in the UK there is no government regulatory body for the funeral industry. This means that anyone (yes, anyone) can call themselves a funeral home or a funeral directors without having any of the necessary skills or experience. It also means they have not been audited for industry compliance.

Just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there were serious talks about a UK Government funeral regulatory body being introduced. Scotland has had government implemented regulation in place since 2016, with its appointment of an Inspector of Funeral Directors, but a UK-wide regulatory body has yet to be put in place. The NAFD is fulfilling the regulatory role in lieu of any official government body and is unafraid to be tough on any member that fails to uphold standards.

Membership of the NAFD is voluntarily paid for by Funeral Directors. What this signifies is that those who are members have willingly volunteered to be inspected by an external body. These checks are regular, rigorous, and thorough. Therefore, the NAFD’s logo is widely acknowledged as the ‘kite mark’ of quality assurance for the funeral industry, and anyone looking for a funeral director should check for NAFD membership before proceeding.

In 2018, Graham Lymn, Chief Executive of the National Association of Funeral Directors, said, “The NAFD represents thousands of funeral homes across the UK and members are subject to regular standard inspections, as well as having to abide by the Association’s Code of Professional Standards and Code of Practice. Members have a very high compliance rate and the public should feel confident that in choosing an NAFD member, they are picking a business which has high standards at its heart.”

Harrison Funeral Home is proud to be a member of the NAFD and will continue to offer our same highest standards of funeral services to those who seek our help. Our ethos to help make a difficult time a little easier, and you can be assured that our benchmarks are in line with those set out by the NAFD.
