Legal limit on mourners at funerals to be lifted, with social distancing remaining

The Government has announced that legal restrictions on the number of mourners permissible at funerals in England will be lifted from 17 May 2021.

In the announcement on Gov.uk, it says, “After careful consideration, the legal limit of 30 mourners will be removed as part of Step 3 of the roadmap, to take place from 17 May at the earliest.”

It is important to note however that social distancing measures will remain in place. Therefore, whilst the legal number of people who can attend any funeral is no longer restricted, each funeral attendance capacity will be determined by the individual venue, such as a church, and how many people it can safely accommodate.
