For many people, arranging a funeral can be a daunting task. But what if you’re not sure how to approach someone’s life as being LGBTQ+?
At Harrison’s, we believe if someone was publicly out and it was their wish to have their life celebrated as LGBTQ+ then they should be able to have the funeral they wanted.
There’s a great article with some wonderful insights on Marie Curie’s website by retired celebrant Mike Wolfe about approaches to arranging a funeral for someone who was LGBTQ+. He says, “For some people who have led quite gay lives, when death happens, people around them revert to very traditional thinking, and they’re not sure whether they’re allowed to have quite a gay funeral.”
Though it need not be this way and it is perhaps better for everyone to have a more open-minded approach. From a very experienced viewpoint Wolfe says, “Funerals can – and should – be as out and proud as those concerned want them to be.”
